Walking the leisurely 400 foot hike down to the Lower Elk River in Fernie, BC, you can almost feel serene and at peace with nature… If it wasn’t for the helmets and bulky life jackets restricting your movements and itching your already sweaty scalp. I mean, seriously! Why did they force you to wear all of this uncomfortable, itchy, heavy, lumpy - and did I mention itchy - stuff?!Then you hear a roaring sound in your ears. It was wild, untamed, and filled your heart with adrenaline, making you forget about the heat, the gaudy life jacket, and the uncomfortable helmets.
The river was calling.
Listening to last minute instructions, double-checking our - itchy - safety gear, and confirming our groups, we awkwardly climbed onto the big, rubbery boats ready for a wet adventure. Gripping our oars and strategically placing ourselves around the raft, we push off…
