Topography Of Terror
March 12, 2008
There are occasions where tourism serves as more then an ‘escape’ from the everyday. There are times when lessons and history play a major role in a tourist destination and if ever there is a city with a dramatic and amazing history, Berlin is it.
One site that offers the tourist an introspective, reflective and challenging experience is The Topography Of Terror. This open air museum sits on land near the Nazi governments central headquarters, including the Secret State Police, the SS leadership, and the Reich Security Main Office. There was also the notorious Gestapo ‘House Prison’ in the area.
What made this site so chilling to me was the high level of organization and planning that went into the extermination of millions of people. They have a series of photos that catalog the developments of the National Socialist Party (Nazi) in the area, and how they categorized all ‘deviants’ into different classes. The level of planning and infrastructure that was required to pull of this tragedy is bewildering, and really challenges the viewer to question how this could have ever happened in modern history. How could such an intellectually and technologically advanced nation set forth such terror. This space is a must visit if you are ever in Berlin.
